Hayley Mary returns to Bad Friday

Hayley Mary is no stranger to Bad Friday. This will be the energetic performer’s third appearance at the inner-west festival. Last year she even got her Mum up on stage for a memorable moment. While she is a long way off the record of most Bad Friday’s ever played (Reg Harris’ 7 times – DMA’s, World Champion, The Tsars) we are more than excited she’s answered the call-up!

The end of 2019 saw Hayley go out on her own. Stepping aside from The Jezabels and releasing the first taste of this year’s debut EP, “The Piss, The Perfume” out via I OH YOU.

We caught up with her to chat about….

The Piss, The Perfume was one of our favourite tracks last year and snuck into everyone’s best-of lists when it was released late in the year. There’s a bit to unpack in that title, what’s it about and is it a theme that carries through the rest of the EP?
Yeah, it is. The simplest way I see the meaning in it is that it’s about the lows and the highs, the happy and the sad, together at once in all of the moments. I wanted to capture my feelings of hope for the future and my nostalgia for an era in my life in Sydney, but I didn’t want the nostalgia to be one dimensional and only evoke the sweet perfume, the rose-tinted images. I wanted to remember the piss as well. I think it’s also funny that piss (alcohol), piss (urine) and perfume are actually all pretty toxic in their ways, but we love to romanticise our toxins, don’t we?

You’ve moved a lot the last few years between Edinburgh, Sydney & Melbourne. How did this effect the EP and was there a city that had more of an impact on the final product?

Maybe it explains why the songs are allover the shop haha. Being in one city gave me perspective on another and the memories I had of it. It’s probably a matter of distance making the heart grow fonder.

What was your favourite Bad Friday memory to date?

I did enjoy falling off the stage and climbing the barrier to the back of the festival and then running back through the crowd a couple years back.

Who will you be watching at this year’s Bad Friday?
I’d like to catch Pond. Great band. And Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys

Get To Know: Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be getting you nice and acquainted with some of the acts performing on Bad Friday.

This week we’re kicking it off with Sydney, alt-country legends, Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys!

Caitlin Harnett and The Pony Boys serve up a warm offering of 70’s alt-country nostalgia. Their highly anticipated debut single, “Make You Feel Blue” was one of our favourite tracks released last year from an act that has garnered the reputation of being one of Sydney’s best live acts!

📸: Joel Mcdonald

There’s a lot to expect from a CH & TPB show. First of all, the band have been playing together for 5 years now and are super tight! Secondly, Caitlin’s voice is so warm it could melt Peter Dutton’s heart. Thirdly, it get’s really loose! Long before rappers and glam rockers earnt the reputation of hard partiers, country musicians blazed the path.

Make sure you get down early to see Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys keeping that flame alive and check out what they had to say below!

MBC: You just performed a bunch of shows up at Tamworth Country Music Festival. How was that and tell us about one of the looser nights you had up there?

Tamworth was so bloody wonderful this year. We’ve been going up for the last few years and before that I’d been going with my parents since I was 13. It was really special to have all our mates there this year. Our second last show was pretty loose. I got half the crowd up on stage and just spat beer on everyone. It was so steamy up there. Then we went out line dancing with the locals.

MBC: If you could allow any person from history to ride with The Pony Boys who would it be and why?

Oh man, that’s a tough question. I’m sure the boys all have different answers for this one but seeing as it’s up to me I choose Tom Petty. I’m just obsessed with him. I saw his last show ever in LA the week before he died, I have his name tattooed on my arm and I think he would just be such a legend to hang out with. He’s my ride or die.

MBC: Who on the Bad Friday Weekender lineup are you most keen on?

I’ve never seen Pond before. I think that will be a fun time. Also stoked to see Hayley Mary.

MBC : What’s the baddest Friday you’ve ever had?

I had a pretty wild night in New York City about 6 years ago with the Dandy Warhol’s. We went to a bunch of different bars and then ended up at the top floor of some hotel party and met David Bowie’s producer. That was pretty badass. Not sure if it was actually on a Friday though…

Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys open up Bad Friday on 10th April. Get your tix below.

MBC Are Opening a Venue!

The cat’s out of the bag and it’s official! The Music and Booze Co are opening a venue!

The Music and Booze Co are excited to announce that we have taken over the reins of the White Horse Hotel on the Princes Highway in St Peters.

After a solid twelve months of planning we are excited to bring this project to life. We have work extensively to design a hotel that can integrate successfully into the local area. Significant works to improve acoustic issues, access, toilets and patron flow are planned to ensure we as business can have a healthy working relationship with our locals, deliver a pub that is POKER MACHINE FREE, support music and the arts and becomes a cherished old school pub for the local and greater inner west community.

We have recently lodged a Development Application with Inner West Council asking to have the restriction on live music lifted from the hotels conditions and approve renovations that will vastly improve the functionality and aesthetic of the pub. If you live locally and would like to show your support to bring this old pub back to life, please email the General Manager at the Inner West council (council@innerwest.nsw.gov.au ) stating the reason for your support and name, address and phone number.

The Development Application and all plans can be viewed via the Inner West DA portal; DA201900405.

All the best, Matt Rule
