The Beer Footy & Food Festival is back with 2 dates this year!!

2020 may have knocked us down but we’re getting back up again and running straight at 2021! Beer Footy Food Festival returns to the iconic Henson Park with not one, but two HUGE days on the hill!

The Beer Footy Food Festival has become a much loved tradition at Henson Park. Allowing revellers the opportunity to enjoy footy the way it was intended, on a grassy hill with a locally brewed beer in hand.

The event sees the perfect marrying of the east coast’s best breweries, Sydney’s hottest purveyors of street food and the showdown between 3 legacy Rugby League clubs:

Saturday 24th July sees the Newtown Jets take on Western Suburbs Magpies
Saturday 7th August sees the Newtown Jets take on South Sydney Rabbitohs

In addition to the 30+ brewers we’ve pulled together, we will also have Natty Wine offerings from Sydney’s PnV Wines, a massive lineup of local food vendors and a bumper dedicated kids section with jumping castles, a petting zoo and heaps more!

Stay tuned over the coming weeks for more announcements including, participating breweries, food offerings, kids rides and more!

The Beer Footy Food Festival is working with Inner-West council, NSW Health and stakeholders to ensure a Covid-Safe event.

We chat to the mastermind of the Oz Music Trading Cards

Sam McEwen is an illustrator, video producer and muso from Sydney. There’s a good chance you’ve come across his video production and animating for triple J, his voice on FBi or music with The S-Bends. Perhaps you may have even heard of his latest endeavour Oz Music Trading Cards. Its the latter of these that led us to catch up with McEwen to find out what was the inspiration and reasoning for OZMTCG, what does the future hold for them and when do the special edition foil wrapped knock off cards come out?

G’day Sam, with all this other stuff on your plate, how did you find time to conceive and launch OZMTCG?

Great question, sometimes I don’t even know. This started as a lockdown project when I had plenty of time on my hands, and since then, I’ve just made it work. Each card has a template which saves a bit of time, and I try to set up a whole week’s worth before the week starts. But yeah, as with most people, I had a lot of time during lockdown, and this was an idea I’ve had on the back burner for a while, so this is how I decided to waste my time. Time well spent I reckon! It’s been great finding bands through this to make cards for. I’ve actually discovered so many good artists with this which has been heaps of fun!

I heard there’s a potential game on the horizon. Any truth to these rumours? If so how will it work?

The rumours are true! It’s in the works. Without revealing too much, you’ll be pitting bands against each other to put on the best show possible. There’ll be an introduction to venue cards too, so any local venues that want to be immortalised on a card, let me know! It’ll be simple, and straight to the point. Hopefully the game will be ready by mid year. You’ll be able to use any cards you’ve picked up so far in the game, so make sure you get collecting!

What are the plans for the cards in the future? When can we expect Tazo-style band collectables?

I’ll be dropping a new batch of printed cards in the next month, so keep your eyes peeled. I’m also keen to work with more record labels on doing little runs with them, so stay tuned for that too! Tazos would be amazing. Someone get Smith’s on the line!

You’ve illustrated a few music-inspired comics already, what’s the process like coming up with a story and drawing your friends?

Usually I just want to highlight a fun show I’ve been to or showcase some great bands. With any comic work, I’ll write a pretty rough script to start, lay down the pencils, go over them in ink, and then scan and colour it digitally. Then I’ll get them published somewhere! Usually I just self-publish in zines or do small print runs of things, but I’ve had stuff published in a few magazines and anthologies which is always really nice to be among good company (speaking of, check out Meet Me In The Pit, I’m in issues 2, but they’re all amazing and a great introduction to comics for music fans). After that, I hope my mates like it and I don’t offend anyone with the way I’ve drawn them. It’s always fun trying to figure out how to translate the sounds and energy of a live show into a flat, static medium. There’s been a few bands that I’ve done comics about who I don’t know personally that really dig them if I’m able to get a copy in their hands. Paul Kelly seemed pretty chuffed when I gave him a copy of the mini-comic I did about ‘Gossip’ which was pretty cool (sorry, I’ll pick up that name I’ve dropped). It’s always fun doing gig posters for mate’s bands as well.

Any news from camp S-Bends?

We’ve had a few rehearsals since restrictions eased late last year, and have all been writing during lockdown, so we’ve got a few new songs simmering away. A few of us are breaking into the wedding circuit as well, playing at a wedding very soon for a mate that we went to high school with. That’s been really fun just learning a bunch of covers that’ll make all the oldies get up and dance. Hopefully no one breaks a hip. If you haven’t jumped on the S-Bends train yet, our mates at Stable Label can hook you up.

New Music – 25/03/21

Only 3 months in and we already have an album of the year contestant. Our feature photo is of the man, the myth, the legend Genesis Owusu. Someone we’ll be talking about in the not to distant future when his a big star about how we got to see and book him in some tiny local venues and early on at festivals!! His already on the way to selling out 8 OAFS, next he’ll be doing 6 Enmores, a couple Hordens and christening the new Sydney Football Stadium. Anyway onto this months new music dump – hope you enjoy.

Genesis Owusu – Smiling with No Teeth (Album) – Our next global 🌎 superstar. Sampa and Genesis to take over the world.

Dexy Oscillator – Glory (album) – Great new punk release from these Melbourne lads. For fans of Shame, Clamm, B Boys

Dry Cleaning – Strong Feelings – Exciting to hear new stuff from these gals. This ones a bit of a slowburner, seems they have uped the production since the first EP. Both sound great either way.

Snakeheads – Shit I dont Have Time For (ft A. Swayze) – Pete Lusty of Ivy League’s posthumous band ft dear friend James Roden (John Reed Club, The City Lights). This release marks the 1 year anniversary of Pete’s tragic departure. Ft A Swayze, its a fast energy punk jam reminiscent of The Clash & the Buzzcocks. Big Love for this one & the Ivy league fam!

Snakeheads · Shit I Don’t Have Time For (feat. A. Swayze)

Baba Stiltz – Running for Chad – This one isn’t as new as the other but the fellas voice is just to good not to post. A very sultry song!

Karate Boogaloo – Bumpys Lament – As the name suggest, this tune has us steady bumping. Ft a little nod to Dr Dre in the last 30 seconds.

Jesswar – TROPIXX EP (EP) – Brisbane’s hardest 💪 !!! Check this great video she did with House of Sle at Phoenix Central Park.

Doe Ramada – Nigerians in Nice Whips – Sydney rapper and producer who pumped out the releases in the past year. This one is slick as!! Mentions joining a Newtown football team – Might see him at this years Beer Footy Food?!?

Mind Meng Wang 王萌 – Nervous Energy 一 触即发 (EP) – Some super cool electronic sounds coming from the latest Music In Exile release. “A collaborative effort between Chinese/Australian avant-garde composer Mindy Meng Wang 王萌, and her Melbourne-based contemporary Tim Shiel (Double J)”

Civic – Tell the Papers – Man I have been trying to get this band up to Sydney since i started working at MBC (5+ years). Another quality release from them & they are signing to flightless! Hopefully have them up here soon..

Courting – Grand National – There has been so much good punk rock coming out of the UK over the last couple years. Here is another one to add to the list, out of Liverpool and sounding a bit like Sports Team or FEET!

That it for this month. If we missed your new favourite track let us know. It wasn’t on purpose!

Added as many Bandcamp links above so you can buy the track’s (if your able) and support the artists. Spotify playlist here as well!

Dancing is back but things are still looking dire for the Aus Music Industry!!

Just last week Old 505 theater announced their closure due to the ongoing pandemic, the restrictions placed on venues & the lack of support from the NSW & Aus government. Kerri , the owner of 505 & a good friend of ours, wrote a very poignant article for the Herald that perfectly sums up the situation.

https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/another-venue-bites-the-dust-while-the-sound-of-silence-echoes-through-nsw-20210310-p579g0.html?btis&fbclid=IwAR0ap7xh-cjwS9ZRiP9z7JqgsmrTV99Ko4t8u4Xjy4feVLIJEbFxnmlBqHo

We have presented hundreds of performances a year, supporting thousands of artists, welcoming hundreds of thousands of audience members. Despite the cultural and economic contribution our sector makes we remain invisible to Perrottet.

The Treasurer argued the most vulnerable sectors post-JobKeeper would be construction, manufacturing, administration and tourism. There was no mention of the event and performance industry anywhere or the $16 billion we collectively contribute to the national economy. Live music is currently operating at a tiny fraction of its usual capacity, events remain nearly non-existent and many venues have not opened since their forced closures last March.” Kerri Glasscock – The Sydney Morning Herald

Coinciding with this article, on Monday the ALMBC put out a national call to save our Industry. With the release of some very harrowing statistics after their most recent members survey, ALMBC outlined the key struggles that music industry is currently facing.

“ALMBC Executive General Manager, Craig Spann, said that with JobKeeper destined to finish at the end of March, it was critical that the industry is supported in getting back to business.

He said that the recovery must be focussed on the thousands of venues across the country that not only provide platforms for artists to perform, but are the backbone of the national live music industry – employing staff and crew while supporting a diverse range of small to medium businesses.”
– ALMBC Newsletter

“The perception that live music is back disguises the devastating reality facing our industry,” he says. “Those shows that are being presented are hampered by restrictions and crowd limits making them unprofitable and unsustainable, with many venues running at well under half their usual capacity for the indefinite future.

“Meanwhile, national tours have not been feasible since March last year. Snap lockdowns and wildly varied quarantine conditions have robbed the industry of confidence while also losing revenue and increasing costs – losses are significant and are putting our industry even further behind as we try to recover.

“Our hands are tied with Government policy preventing us from getting back to work supporting our employees and the thousands of small businesses around the country that are integral to the industry.”

All this comes now as NSW announces that dancing in venues & clubs will return next Monday 29th March, albeit still at 50% capacity (1 per 2qm) unless seated.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet described the easing of restrictions as a “stride in the right direction”. “We are pretty much back to normal and that’s a great thing for the people of our state,” Though are we really?

It seems the government needs to realise that easing these restrictions days before jobkeeper ends will not fix things in an instant. The Aus Music industry need to be recognised for its economic and cultural contribution & if it is not, it wont be long before it disappears!

Hard On’s Music Doco is a Go!! Here’s some more to watch in the mean time..

In some amazing news SBS is set to help fund the new Hard On’s documentary, ‘Hard On’s: The Most Australian Band Ever!‘, due out next year!

Made by Jonathan Sequeira’s, who also brought us ‘Descent In The Maelstrom: The Radio Birdman Story‘, the doco follows the story of 3 boys from Punchy, Ray Ahn (bass), Peter “Blackie” Black (guitar) and Keish de Silva (drums), who formed in 1981 and became one of Australia’s best punk rock bands to date!

Trailer here:

And seeing as we’ve got a year to wait here are a couple other great Australian music documentaries you can check out to tide you over!

Descent into Maelstrom – The Radio Birdman Story

‘The true story of Radio Birdman, the pre-punk band who changed Australia. Kicked out and shut down, ‘the loudest band in the land’ start their own scene, attracting a ‘New Race’ of inner-city kids. But the band’s intensity turns inwards and they self-destruct on a tour of England in 1978.‘

Big Name No Blanket

“George Rrurrambu, legendary frontman of the Warumpi Band, made an extraordinary contribution to contemporary Indigenous music and awakened the Australian consciousness of a third world in its own back yard. This documentary tells his story; filled with interviews, clips and music, as we follow George from his island home to his premature demise.“

Her Story, Her Sound

‘HER SOUND, HER STORY is an intimate conversation unveiling the personal experiences, histories and significant social impacts of women in the Australian music industry. Featuring more than 45 artists spanning six decades, its unique narrative brims with rage, strength, beauty and triumph: a moving and powerful dialogue that extends beyond the music industry to ask, “Where do we want women’s voices to sit in the world today?”

Love and Anachary: The Wild Wild World Of Jamie Leonard

This one is close to our hearts, a doco about one of the most beautiful people in the world, Mr Jay Katz. ‘Chronicles the life and times of one of Australia’s true champions of outsider culture. Featuring the near legendary industrial-noise band, The Mu-Mesons as they reform for one last major performance touring with US artist Mike Patton‘

Firestarter

“Through the eyes of the Page brothers and company alumni, Firestarter explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma and crucially, the extraordinary power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.”
