We have another rippin’ week of shows coming up. Delivered to you weekly, here’s your shipment of the freshest gigs in town as chosen by our staff.

Friday – Thunder Fox – The House of Music and Booze

Having spent the first half of the year revelling in their return to live touring, Sydney’s Thunder Fox have kept the same energy they’ve brought to stages along the East Coast into new music. The group’s music, drenched in groove and funk, is elevated and as they continue to explore new influences and creative pathways, Thunder Fox enter a new era. We can’t wait to have these guys down at the House and we’re excited to welcome you all here too!

Friday – Butter Bath – The Chippo

Straddling the gap between psych rock and RnB, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Toby Anagnostis, delivers his conversations about self-assessment, love and spirituality under the moniker of Butter Bath. Toby directs every aspect of the creative process from the first drum groove to the final elements of production, making for a sincerely raw and undiluted insight into his psyche.

Saturday – Shadow – Waywards

On Saturday we’ve got one of Perth’s finest rappers, Shadow through at Waywards. This is a not to miss show if you’re into rap/hip-hop. Strong hooks and trademark rapid flows highlight just how much work SHADOW has put into his craft.

Saturday – Gut Health – Vic on the Park

Gut Health head out from Naarm for a few shows in anticipation of their upcoming debut 7″ ‘Electric Party Chrome Girl’ out November 18 (via Marthouse Records). Catch them at Vic on the Park for a *free* Friday night affair with local legends LOOSE FIT. Armed with just the one single, the band have done incredibly well for themselves in such a short time.

Another week of great shows is happening across our many venues this weekend. Here’s your weekly destination to find out what we’re looking forward to here at The Music and Booze Co.

Lee Sullivan and The Sleepers – The House of Music and Booze – Thursday

Tonight (Thursday) we have Lee Sullivan and The Sleepers at the House. Lee Sullivan is as comfortable in vivid indie rock as he is in contemplative alternative folk music. In everything he does, there’s a thread of care – his songs don’t shy away from the existential and tricky questions of life, and often offer a warm embrace or sheer fun after journeying through that troubling territory.

Austin Mackay ‘Dancing Through The Fire’ Tour – The Chippo Hotel – Friday

Friday night Austin Mackay takes the stage for the Sydney leg ‘Dancing Through The Fire’ tour. Fast rising Indie/Rock artist, Austin Mackay, is back with a brand new single ‘Dancing Through The Fire’, and to celebrate is announcing an extensive Australian Tour that will take in 16 shows across six states this October and November.

Palms + Bloods – The House of Music and Booze – Friday

Like sunshine through the rain, Sydney pop-punk pals Bloods and Palms have announced they will be bringing two special co-headline shows to Sydney and Melbourne. One night only here at the House we will see two of the country’s finest go head-to-head in a co-headliner for the ages.

Lincolns Gold – Final Show – Vic on the Park – Saturday

The time has come. The Sydney music scene has spoken. It’s time for Lincoln’s Gold to go!
Witness the live execution of this horrible band. Witness each member beg for forgiveness for the many vile acts they have committed. Witness the final ever Lincoln’s Gold performance and rejoice in their removal from our otherwise beautiful music community.

In all seriousness, it’s the end of an era. Get down on Saturday to say your goodbyes to one of the best!

Get tickets for all of these + more here!

MBC Chats: Dead Witch – New EP

The world spins fast but Dead Witch spin faster, not even a year after their first single the band are soon to release their debut self-titled EP. It’s a true testament to the bands’ commitment to music and, moreover, each other.

It’s fair to say that Dead Witch has played a big part in the revival of big-riff, fuzzy rock ‘n’ roll here in Sydney, and seem to have a lot of fun doing it. We caught up with the band this week and were lucky enough to find out what makes the proverbial Dead Witch clock tick ahead of their headline show at Waywards.

Speaking on the whirlwind that 2022 has been for the five-piece so far, the group had a few favourite memories from the year. “So many [memories]! Getting to spend a dream weekend down at Stranded Studios in Bellambi recording our debut was amazing for us” explained singer, Jaimee Taylor-Nielsen.

“Learning so much about the recording process and recording all the instruments live made it such a huge vibe. The guys running Stranded, Bowen and Cody, made the whole experience feel like camp.” Any session that produces good music has a bit of riot too, right? ‘We had a bit of a big night down there as well that resulted in memories that still crack us up (…and a couple of minor injuries).’

The bands’ success is a testament to the above; hard work and friendship melting together to create something beautiful. “It’s pretty special to be able to do something creative and have so many incredible experiences together.” They said. “We don’t take it for granted, it’s definitely added this other layer to our friendships, and our understanding of ourselves, and each other.”

Musically, Dead Witch takes cues from the Runaways, Nice Biscuit, Fleetwood Mac, Stonefield, and L.A. Witch. The EP is a love letter to their influences, yet remains keenly true-to-self. “The EP is a bit of a melting pot but is ultimately a great introduction to Dead Witch. It features our two punchier rock singles, ’15 Dennies’ and ‘Starfucker’, plus two more longer-form songs, ‘La Nina’ and ‘Falling in Line.’” Said Jaimee. “The two new songs are these more undulating jammy psych journeys… we love playing them live and are really excited about having them on the record.”

We’re very lucky to be hosting Dead Witch on the 18th at Waywards. It’s always a special moment seeing the five-piece grace the stage and captivate audiences. In a mix of emotions the band are both excited and nervous ‘So excited! Also nervous lets be real. Playing to hometown crowds is simultaneously super special and also sometimes we get in our heads about it…’ They said.

‘We could let the imposter syndrome take over but that’d be pretty boring of us hey. Shows are getting way more fun as we get more under our belt and having familiar faces in the crowd is killer. It also usually means there’ll be a good kick on.’

Come down to Waywards on the 18th and get amongst it with a killer line-up including support from Magic Machine, Liquid Zoo and Itchy & The Nits. It’s bound to be one of the biggest local shows of the year! Tickets here.

MBC Chats: Mac the Knife – Labour in Vain

The garage-punk heavy hitters take us through their latest release and what their new sound means for the future.

By Jack O’Connor

A couple of weeks ago, Sydney garage-punks Mac the Knife shared the first offering from their upcoming EP, with the track ‘Labour in Vain’. The song is a battle cry to overcome the fear of judgement of others, and is a love letter to becoming a better self. The band have been a staple in Sydney’s underground music scene for years and are finding strong form in 2022, fresh off some big supports for the likes of Johnny Hunter, and getting love from Triple J and FBI – perfectly preceding their upcoming EP ‘In the Shadow of it All’.

“It is a love letter to being a better you, to acknowledging your shit and working through it.” shares the groups guitarist, Curtis. “But more importantly, to being happy with who you are without the validation of others. A reminder that fear only holds control over you if you allow it to.” Regardless of how heavy hitting the band can be sonically, their unmistakable honesty and imagination shines through the thrilling music.

“We are so happy to finally show what we’ve been working on for what feels like forever and how far our music has changed from the first E.P. “

‘Labour in Vain’ is the bands first release since 2018, and it’s clear to see that the last few years have influenced their sound in 2022.

“We got a chance to redefine our music evolving it into something we’re really proud of.” shares Curtis, continuing “It’s made us more thoughtful about what we’re writing about and reignited the fire for live music. It’s so nice being back playing live!”

Mac the Knife manage to acknowledge their influences and reference some of the great bands of our time, whilst maintaining complete authenticity in their music. Citing Idles, The Murder Capital, Fontaine’s D.C., Press Club and The Strokes as the soundtrack to the studio sessions for In the Shadow of it All. The band also showed love for Sydney locals Muscle Mary, Barley Passable, Joseph Liddy and the Skeleton Horse and Marilyn Maria, stating that these acts are favourites at the moment.

One such act, Marilyn Maria are supporting Mac the Knife at The House of Music and Booze this weekend. “Some unbelievable bands are playing with us and if the show sells out maybe Bryn will remove his shirt.” Said Curtis. “If that’s not a selling point I don’t know what is!” Well, you heard the man. Tickets are moving incredibly fast and will sell-out! Get them now here and find out what all the hype is about for yourself.
